Peek inside: Duke Energy founder’s NYC mansion on Central Park hits market for $80M
One of New York City’s most iconic private homes, which once belonged to tobacco and energy magnate Benjamin Newton Duke from Durham, is up for sale.
The price tag to acquire this piece of history: a whopping $80 million.
Known as the “Duke Mansion,” it’s located at 1009 Fifth Avenue at East 82nd Street and designed in the Beaux Arts style with a French Renaissance interior.
“It’s one of the last remnants of the luxurious mansions along Fifth Avenue facing Central Park that remain in private hands. A true architectural masterpiece, “ according to the Compass real estate listing.
Born on the family farm north of Durham, Duke helped build the family’s tobacco empire and one of the largest fortunes of the 19th century. He became vice president of the American Tobacco Company and founded Duke Energy, then gave most of his wealth away in philanthropy.
Duke purchased the mansion with his wife shortly after it was built and lived there from 1901 to 1907, according to New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The five-story, 20,000-square-foot limestone and red-brick mansion has has eight bedrooms and 10 bathrooms.
The mansion is currently owned by Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim, who bought the mansion in 2010 for $44 million.
