See ‘off-the-grid-style’ dome home for sale on 12 wooded North Carolina acres

A retired couple are selling their longtime, “off-the-grid-style” geodesic dome home on 12.3 wooded acres in eastern Cabarrus County.

Dean and Judith Kroll have lived in their 5,300-square-foot home, located at 10200 Amsterdam Drive in Mount Pleasant, since they had it built in 2001, Realtor Ashley Horton of the Charlotte office of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty told The Charlotte Observer on Friday.

The couple are selling the home for $950,000, according to its listing.

“They’re just beginning a new chapter in their lives,” Horton said, declining to be more specific.

The Krolls raised their children in the 2 1/2-story home, which has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and loved the tree-draped setting, she said.

The site attracted the couple because “it’s very quiet, very peaceful,” Horton said. “It’s just truly beautiful nature.”

Dean Kroll planted fruit trees there, and the couple was “ahead of their time” with the energy-efficient dome, she said.

Dean Kroll is a former U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor, public records show.

A spokeswoman at Premier Sotheby’s headquarters in Naples, Fla., described the home and its acreage as comparable to living off the grid.

Still, the home “is not isolated,” Horton said, given its 10 or 11 neighbors and proximity to bustling, Cabarrus County towns.

Located on the former Pruitt Farms site, the home is a two-minute drive from downtown Mount Pleasant and 15 to 20 minutes from Harrisburg and Concord, she said.

Baden Lake is 20 minutes away,” Horton said.

The lake in Uwharrie Forest is popular with campers, hikers, anglers, hunters, boaters, swimmers and picnickers.

“Rich woodwork, panoramic windows”

The home has “soaring” vaulted ceilings; a cupola; a wall-to-wall glass, solarium-style dining area; a finished, walk-out basement; and two powered workshops, according to its listing.

The great room includes “rich woodwork and panoramic windows” and opens to the kitchen, breakfast area and solarium, according to Premier Sotheby’s.

A main-level primary suite includes a private bath and large walk-in closet and leads directly to the outdoors.

The finished lower level includes a recreation area and gym, storage and laundry space. The home also has a two-car garage.

While spacious, the home “still feels cozy” and lets in lots of natural light, Horton said.

The grounds are “like a private nature preserve,” according to the listing. A winding stone path leads through trails, a small orchard, meadows and woods.
