  • Chakravarthy bought the 5.47‑acre site for $1.9M, plans to break ground in July.

A new specialty Asian grocer is set to anchor one of western Wake County’s busiest growth corridors, a sign of how quickly the area’s development patterns are changing as demographics shift.

Retail developer Pradeep Chakravarthy is bringing an 18,000-square-foot IndiFresh Supermarket to 1215 Pine Plaza in Apex. It’s just off Hwy 64 and around the corner from mega-retailer Costco.

Called Glenn Square, it will also include a second, two‑story 14,580‑square‑foot building, which will offer “flexible commercial space” for future tenants, he said.

Its target audience: the region’s growing Asian population.

“As a local team, we’ve been searching for the right site for more than three years,” said Chakravarthy, who purchased the 5.47-acre site last April for $1.9 million, property records show.

“When this location next to Hwy 64 and Costco became available, it immediately stood out as the ideal address for our next store,” he told The N&O. “We honestly couldn’t imagine a better location in (the Triangle).”

Wake County has the highest percentage of Asian residents in the state at 9.3%, with about 110,000, according to the latest Census data. In Morrisville, in western Wake, nearly half of the 31,000 residents are Asian or of Asian heritage.

Chakravarthy and his partners debuted the first IndiFresh store — along with a small cluster of retail spaces — during the pandemic in Cumming, Georgia, just north of Atlanta. Among its fast‑casual offerings: butter chicken ($10.99), puri potato ($9.99), and paneer biryani ($12.99).

They plan to break ground on their Apex location in July.

The supermarket will include indoor and outdoor seating, a bakery, beer cave and ice cream station. It’s projected to employ more than 35 full‑ and part‑time members.

“Costco is already drawing thousands of shoppers here every day,” Chakravarthy added. “We see an opportunity to turn this corner into a true one‑stop destination that complements what Costco offers.”
