Updated March 20 with list of new feeding sites

The Wake County school system has worked with community groups to set up sites around the district where students can pick up meals to eat while schools are closed due to the coronavirus threat.

Starting March 17, volunteers were curbside at locations across the county to distribute food in sanitized food containers. The district said that identification is not required to pick up the food at the sites.

Sites are for students ages 18 and under. But school officials say that parents don’t have to bring their children with them.

The new feeding sites come as public schools in North Carolina are closed through March 30 as a result of an executive order signed Saturday by Gov. Roy Cooper. Leaders both in Wake and statewide have talked about how it’s important to find ways to feed the many low-income students who rely on school meals.

Programs have been set up statewide to help feed students.

“There are many in our district and the community, as well as the state level, (who) are concerned about the care and feeding of our students during this period,” Wake County school board chairman Keith Sutton said March 16 at a news conference.

Nearly 51,000 of Wake’s 161,907 students qualify for the federal free-and-reduced lunch program. But Wake says the sites will be open for all students.

The district has gone from 4,899 meals served Tuesday to 6,336 on Wednesday and 7,137 on Thursday.

Wake announced 16 sites on March 16. Another 11 were added to list on March 20 and will be open March 23.
