Durham County reports three new coronavirus cases, now has most in NC
Durham County reported three more cases of coronavirus Thursday evening for a total of eight for the day. The new cases bring Durham County’s total to 35, the largest number of cases in North Carolina.
The Durham County Department of Public Health is investigating to determine if the individuals had close contact with others while symptomatic. Close contact is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as being within six feet of some who has COVID-19, which causes coronavirus, for at least 10 minutes.
On Wednesday, Duke University announced it was postponing its spring commencement ceremony after more cases were announced. In Durham, 26 of the 35 cases are members of the Duke community, according to the university and Durham County.
At the time of Durham’s announcement early Thursday evening, North Carolina had more than 130 known cases of coronavirus across 25 counties. Wake County had 25 cases and Mecklenburg had 32.
To slow the spread of illness, Gov. Roy Cooper has banned mass gatherings of 100 people or more, closed K-12 public schools and ordered bars and restaurants to close except for takeout and delivery.
