Investigative news tips? Here’s how to share them with us securely
Every day at The News & Observer and The Herald-Sun, we focus on accountability journalism. We illuminate the issues that, at times, people in power don’t want you to see. We investigate and report on the facts you want and need, so that you can make choices on how to live your best life in a democracy.
Especially during a crisis, we need your help in finding those hidden stories. People who live and work in our communities are the best sources of eyewitness, first-hand information.
We have several ways for you to reach us with information, including confidentially and anonymously.
- Send investigative news, ideas and tips through a form on the “Contact Us” section on our website.
- If you’d like to share information more discreetly, you can send us tips, documents or data through SecureDrop. This is an open-source, encrypted system that will keep the identity and source of a submission anonymous. Go to newsobserver.com/customer-service/how-to-use-securedrop/.
- Using the secure, encrypted Signal app, you can reach several journalists including Managing Editor Jane Elizabeth at 919-335-8181; Politics & Government Editor Jordan Schrader at 919-438-0905; and politics reporter Lucille Sherman, 405-471-7979.
- Many of our reporters and editors can be reached through Whatsapp, also an encrypted messaging app.
- Send an email to metroeds@newsobserver.com.
- Call our main number at 800-522-4205.
We look forward to hearing from you as we work diligently and aggressively to report on the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on our communities.
