Durham reports more cases of coronavirus, new evidence of community spread

Durham County on Tuesday reported three new positive tests for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.

The number of reported cases grew from 71 on Monday to 74 Tuesday.

The county also announced that there was evidence of community spread, which means that the person infected does not know how they were infected.

Of Durham’s cases, at least 26 were Duke students, the university and Durham County said Monday. The university began online classes for students and faculty on Monday.

Neighboring Wake County identified 73 cases and also pointed to community spread.

Across North Carolina, there have been more than 400 positive tests for coronavirus, and state health officials predicted the virus would be in all 100 counties by next week.

Gov. Roy Cooper has encouraged people who are at high risk to stay home as much as possible. He also encouraged “as many businesses as possible to have people working from home.”
