Lowe’s raises pledge for coronavirus relief funding to over $100 million

Lowe’s Home Improvement is raising its investment in coronavirus response support to $105 million, the company said Wednesday. And some of that money will now go to worker bonuses.

That’s four times the original investment the Mooresville-based company had announced days earlier when it pledged $25 million in support for impacted communities. The pledge included $10 million in products for medical professionals and hospitals nationwide, and $1.5 million for the Charlotte area.

The company said Wednesday in a news release it is raising its commitment to workers and communities by another $80 million.

The additional funds include bonuses of $300 for full-time hourly employees and $150 for part-time and seasonal workers “to recognize their tireless efforts to serve customers and communities and to help with those who may be experiencing unplanned expenses and hardships during this time.”

The company also is extending emergency paid leave for up to four weeks for people at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. The company had previously announced two-week emergency paid leave for all associates.

“Our stores remain open to provide essential products to customers, government officials and first responders,” the company stated.

Lowe’s $1.5 million commitment in the Charlotte area includes:

Donating $1 million donation to the COVID-19 Response Fund, launched by Foundation for the Carolinas and United Way of Central Carolina to help vulnerable people who need immediate help.

Replenishing masks to Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region, which donated all of its masks to local healthcare professionals.

Other actions

Lowe’s also is emphasizing social distancing at stores, increasing cleanings, implementing curbside pickup for customers and leaving delivery items at the door or garage, or asking if anyone tested positive for COVID-19 before installation.

Earlier this month, Lowe’s put 10-item limits on purchases of high-demand items, such as bleach, disinfectants, hand and dish soaps, cleaning gloves, paper towels and bath tissue, bottled water and air purifiers/filters.

Lowe’s said it is hiring 30,000 full-time, part-time, overnight and seasonal positions throughout the U.S. Apply online at jobs.lowes.com.
