North Carolina COVID-19 cases jumped significantly Sunday between morning and evening

State officials reported another 127 North Carolina cases of COVID-19 in less than eight hours on Sunday.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 1,040 cases in the state on Sunday morning. Then just before 6 p.m., the state reported a new number number of 1,167.

This is the first time the state has updated its case count twice in one day.

State officials are reporting five deaths and 91 hospitalizations. There have been 18,945 completed coronavirus tests.

The majority of cases are people between the ages of 25 and 49 years old.

The case counts don’t give a full picture of how widespread COVID-19 is, DHHS says. Not all patients with the illness are tested.

Some additional cases reported by county health departments are not immediately included in the number reported by the state.

The News & Observer is keeping a real-time count of additional cases announced by counties updated throughout the day. The N&O reports 1,184 cases in 78 counties.
