Guilford County resident dies of COVID-19, bringing NC death count to 10

A Guilford County resident who was 78 years old died from complications related to COVID-19, the county announced Tuesday. The patient had underlying medical conditions.

The Guilford County Division of Public Health said it will not release further information about the patient to protect the family’s privacy.

This is the first coronavirus-related death reported in Guilford County and brings the total to 10 reported deaths in the state. Two other deaths were reported earlier Tuesday in Forsyth and Cherokee counties.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and their loved ones,” Guilford County Interim Health Director Dr. Julia Vann said in a news release. “This death is a tragic occurrence in our efforts to combat COVID-19.”

“It underscores the urgent need for us to take extra steps to protect residents who are particularly vulnerable to developing more serious illness, including elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions,” she said.

Vann urged the community to strictly follow Guilford County’s Stay at Home Proclamation Order, which is critical to slow community spread.
