Coronavirus

There were almost 60 new coronavirus cases reported in the Triangle on Wednesday

Wake, Durham and Orange counties each reported additional cases of the new coronavirus Wednesday evening.

Wake County has reported 35 new cases, upping its total to 228 cases.

Durham reported 16 new cases, bringing its total from 125 to 141 cases. And the state health department reported Orange County had five new cases, bring its total to 37 cases.

Wake County has the second most cases in the state, behind Mecklenburg County.

Wake has seen an increase in the number of positive cases every day since its first COVID-19 case on March 2.

Listen to our daily briefing:

The state health department reported 1,584 positive cases of COVID-19 and 13 deaths in North Carolina Wednesday morning. Of those positive cases, 43 percent are ages 25 to 49 years old, said Mandy Cohen, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. But 78 percent of those who died were 65 or older.

There are likely more cases that have not been counted as health officials are not testing people who experience mild symptoms.

The News & Observer is keeping a separate count based partially on reports from county health departments. As of Wednesday, that total stood at 1,717.

North Carolina has conducted 26,243 coronavirus tests, as of Wednesday morning, and 204 people with coronavirus were hospitalized statewide.
