Orange County reports two cases of coronavirus at a long-term care nursing, rehab facility

A long-term nursing and rehabilitation facility in Durham has two cases of COVID-19, the Orange County Health Department reported on Thursday.

The two coronavirus cases at PruittHealth-Carolina Point include a health care worker and a resident of the facility. The worker is isolated at home in satisfactory condition. The facility resident is currently hospitalized at Duke University Hospital.

Orange County had 37 coronavirus cases as of Thursday afternoon.

“We have been in daily communications with the facility since it became concerned about a resident with respiratory symptoms over two weeks ago,” Orange County Health Director Quintana Stewart said in the release. “Together, we have been monitoring symptomatic residents and testing suspected close contacts as needed.”

The News and Observer left a phone message for Stewart that was not immediately returned.

The facility, located at 5935 Mount Sinai Road, has 140 beds and has taken extra measures to ensure the safety of both the staff and residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

PruittHealth has limited visitation and is practicing isolation precautions when a staff member or resident shows any symptoms. They have also placed a restriction on volunteers and non-essential health care personnel. Visitors are screened for symptoms (fever, respiratory illness) before they are allowed into the facility. Any residents who have shown any symptoms are placed in isolation in a private room.

The Durham location is one of 13 Pruitt facilities with a confirmed case of COVID-19, according to the PruittHealth website.

According the the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there have been four coronavirus cases in nursing homes in the state as of Thursday.
