Triangle counties report 38 new cases of COVID-19, as state totals reach over 3,200

Triangle counties reported 38 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, as numbers statewide climbed to more than 3,200.

Wake County reported 16 new positive cases of COVID-19, upping its total to 351 total cases. The county reported 335 on Monday. Cases in Wake County have climbed each day since it reported the state’s first case on March 2.

Durham County also reported 16 new positive cases, bringing its total from 203 to 219.

And the state Department of Health and Human Services reported Orange County had 73 cases, an increase of six since Monday.

The department also reported 3,221 confirmed cases statewide, as of Tuesday afternoon. Of the people who are sick, 354 remain hospitalized.

The state has been under stay-at-home orders since March 30.

The News & Observer is keeping its own tally, and has reported at least 3,320 cases of coronavirus and 54 deaths as of April 7, according to data reported from the state’s health department and county health departments.

The case counts don’t give a full picture of how widespread COVID-19 is, DHHS says. Some counties, like Wake County, are no longer testing patients with mild symptoms. Wake County reserves tests only for people 65 and older, people with underlying health issues, first responders and health care workers.
