Six state and federal correctional institutions in NC have coronavirus outbreaks

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported on Monday that there were six outbreaks at correctional facilities across the state.

On Monday, the Johnston County Health Department announced that six people tested positive for COVID-19 at the Johnston Correctional Institution.

Three inmates and three staff members at the minimum-security prison in Smithfield have tested positive for the coronavirus, the health department stated.

The counties with outbreaks at correctional facilities include: Granville; Greene; Halifax; Johnston; Pasquotank; Wayne.

Butner federal prison is also trying to contain an outbreak.

More than 80 people have tested positive at Butner Prison in Granville County, and at least four inmates have died, the News & Observer reported on Monday.
