Getting into a home office routine? NC ranks among best states for working remotely
As coronavirus upends daily routines, North Carolina ranks among the top places for working from home.
The state earned a No. 9 spot in a study of job and living conditions that impact employees who are not in the office, according to findings from the personal finance website WalletHub.
To come up with the results, WalletHub says it analyzed labor, utilities and housing data. It assigned scores to every state and the District of Columbia, according to the findings released Monday.
North Carolina ranked 5th in the “work environment” category, a measure of home internet access and cybersecurity. The category also weighed the state’s share of people with jobs conducive for remote work and the portion of employees who did their duties at home before the COVID-19 outbreak, results show.
But the Tar Heel state scored below average in another category.
It ranked No. 34 for “living environment,” an analysis of electricity costs, internet plans and housing size, according to WalletHub. North Carolina got a scoring boost when its homes were named among the best for average square footage.
The results come after the state’s Triangle region was named one of the best in the United States for remote work. Both Raleigh and Durham made it onto SmartAsset’s top 20 list, The News & Observer reported in January.
In recent weeks, companies in North Carolina and beyond have allowed employees to work from home as coronavirus spreads.
Overall, WalletHub named Delaware the best state in the country for at-home work, results show. Alaska ranked at the bottom of the list.
