Hands dry and itchy from constant washing? Here’s how to get relief during pandemic

Soaps and sanitizers help protect from the coronavirus, but all of that scrubbing can take a toll on your hands.

That’s because the constant washing can break down the protective layer of skin, creating the potential for dryness and itchiness, according to Harvard Medical Center and UCLA Health.

To take steps toward relief, experts recommend washing hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap that’s mild and scent-free. After rinsing, people should let their hands air dry or gently pat them with a towel, according to health professionals.

“While your hands are slightly damp, apply your hand cream or ointment” all over the skin, being sure not to skip the fingers, the American Academy of Dermatology Association said in tips published on its website.

When using sanitizers, experts recommend waiting until after the product dries to moisturize.

“Hand sanitizers with too much alcohol can be drying to chapped skin,” UCLA Health said. “You can try a hand sanitizer with a moisturizing base, just know that it will not be as effective in killing viruses.”

What are the best ways to care for dry hands?

Moisturizers that come in jars or tubes are usually thicker, making them better to use than lotions in pump bottles, according to Harvard Medical Center. Officials there say people should consider putting on additional products, like petroleum jelly, before going to sleep.

People experiencing dryness can also reach out to dermatologists for advice, according to health experts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, health officials urge frequent handwashing to help stop the spread of the disease.

Handwashing is recommended “especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If soap and water aren’t available, officials advise using sanitizers with 60% alcohol or more.
