Third Wake County nursing home reports coronavirus outbreak, the 50th in the state
A third Wake County nursing home is reporting an outbreak at its facility, according to a county press release.
The county’s public health team confirmed positive cases at Capital Nursing and Rehabilitation Care in Raleigh. The release did not say how many cases there were. The county says it will not release information about the residents or employees.
The state defines a coronavirus outbreak as two or more people — residents or staff — as testing positive for the disease.
“We are working with the facility’s medical staff to answer their questions about the virus and provide guidance to protect their residents and staff,” Wake County Epidemiologist Dr. Nicole Mushonga said in a statement.
Of the three COVID-19 outbreaks at nursing homes in Wake County, this is the second in Raleigh. Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center reported an outbreak earlier this month.
Wellington Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Knightdale was the first Wake County nursing home to report an outbreak, The News & Observer reported.
Statewide, there are at least 50 COVID-19 outbreaks, 1,649 positive cases and 169 deaths at nursing homes.
People 65 and older and those with underlying health conditions are more likely to suffer from severe symptoms from the coronavirus, according to the CDC.
How many cases are in the Triangle?
Triangle counties continued to report increases in positive cases and deaths. But the state is doing more tests each day, and the overall percentage of positive tests is falling, said Dr. Mandy Cohen, the secretary of North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services.
She spoke at a news conference Thursday, the same day the state reported a single-day high of 561 new cases in the morning. That brings the total of positive cases to 10,509, according to the DHHS.
“We are testing more and we are seeing this trend go in the right direction, which is good news,” Cohen said.
North Carolina recorded 6,000 tests on Wednesday, Cohen said, meeting the goal of conducting between 5,000-7,000 tests per day.
Here is a look at the number of cases in the Triangle:
Wake County: 833 COVID-19 cases, up from 814. 18 deaths, up from 16.
Durham County: 733 cases, up from 724. 21 deaths, up from 20.
Durham has reported coronavirus outbreaks at five nursing homes. There are 111 confirmed cases at Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 49 at Treyburn Rehabilitation Center, five at Durham Recovery Response Center, four at Durham Veteran Affairs Healthcare System Community Nursing Home and two at Hillcrest Convalescent Center.
Orange County: 217 cases, the same reported Wednesday. 16 deaths, up from 15.
Johnston County: 158 cases, up from 149. 13 deaths, which has been consistent this week. Eleven of the people who died were residents at Springbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Fifty-eight residents and 21 staff members have tested positive for the virus.
