North Carolina COVID-19 cases approach the 100,000 mark. Hospitalizations down.
The number of new coronavirus cases in North Carolina climbed Sunday to just below 100,000 cases, as hospitalizations declined for a second day.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported 1,820 new COVID-19 cases across the state Sunday, bringing the total up to 99,778.
The agency reported 1,634 people have died, up five from a day earlier.
The number of those in the state hospitalized for COVID-19 dropped by 39 Sunday to 1,115.
While it isn’t unusual for hospitalizations to decline on Sundays, when less hospitals have been reporting, the numbers also fell by 26 Saturday after reaching a record high of 1,180 Friday.
The number of completed COVID-19 tests increased by 15,721 Sunday to 1,394,864.
The percentage of positive cases from daily testing remained at 9% Saturday, the latest date available.
State public health officials track coronavirus spread through metrics that include hospitalizations, the number of new cases, and the percentage of people who tested positive.
Triangle and Charlotte
The numbers of new cases also continued to climb in the Triangle and in the Charlotte area.
As of Sunday afternoon:
▪ Mecklenburg County cases increased by 332 to 17,379. The county has 170 deaths.
▪ Wake County cases increased by 175 to 8,768. Eighty-nine people have died in Wake.
▪ Durham County cases increased by 62 to 5,049. Seventy-two people have died.
▪ Orange County’s cases increased by 19 to 1,102. Forty-five have died in Orange.
