North Carolina reports 1,621 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, more than 34,000 tests

COVID-19 cases in North Carolina continued to increase Sunday as the number of new tests surpassed 34,000.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported 1,621 new COVID-19 cases across the state Sunday, bringing the total up to 112,713.

A total of 1,785 have died from COVID-19 complications, up seven from the day before.

The number of completed COVID-19 tests increased by 34,343 Sunday to 1,613,385. Sunday marks the third highest one-day total for new tests.

The record for new tests in one day peaked on July 18 at 35,169. The second highest was Tuesday, when testing numbers hit 35,109.

The percentage of positive cases from daily testing increased to 9% Saturday, the latest date available, up from 7% the day before.

The number of those in the state hospitalized for COVID-19 increased by two on Saturday to 1,170.

On Saturday, 85% of hospitals reported patients hospitalized with COVID-19, while 95% of hospitals reported Friday.

Saturday is the latest data available.

State public health officials track coronavirus spread through metrics that include hospitalizations, the number of new cases, and the percentage of people who tested positive.

The Triangle and Charlotte

The number of new cases also continued to climb in the Triangle and in the Charlotte area.

As of Sunday afternoon:

Mecklenburg County cases increased by 227 to 19,268. In the county, 183 people have died from COVID-19 complications.

Wake County cases increased by 172 to 9,991. In Wake, 108 people have died, up three from the day before.

Durham County cases increased by 51 to 5,487. Seventy-six people have died.

Orange County’s cases increased by to six to 1,197. Forty-five people have died.
