Herman Cain treated with oxygen, still in hospital weeks after coronavirus diagnosis
Former presidential candidate Herman Cain remains hospitalized nearly a month after he was diagnosed with coronavirus, according to a statement.
“He is still in the hospital being treated with oxygen for his lungs,” a statement posted on Cain’s Twitter account reads. “In the meantime, the doctors say his other organs and systems are strong. Re-strengthening the lungs is a long and slow process, and the doctors want to be thorough about it.”
Cain tested positive for COVID-19 on June 29 and was admitted to an Atlanta-area hospital July 1, a previous statement read. Two weeks after he was admitted, Cain’s team gave an update on his prognosis that stated doctors liked the progress he was making.
It’s unclear how Cain contracted the virus. On June 20, he attended President Donald Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he tweeted a picture of himself around other people not wearing a mask.
People who attended the Oklahoma rally had to sign a coronavirus disclaimer, McClatchy News reported.
Trump did not meet with Cain at the rally, according to NBC News. Six of Trump’s staffers tested positive for coronavirus before the rally, and two more tested positive after they returned to Washington, D.C., according to The Washington Post.
Two days after Cain’s team said he tested positive for coronavirus, he tweeted support about mask-wearing not being mandated a July 4 Trump rally held at Mount Rushmore.
“Masks will not be mandatory for the event, which will be attended by President Trump. PEOPLE ARE FED UP!” he tweeted the day before he was hospitalized.
