East Carolina University reports new COVID-19 clusters in two campus dorms

East Carolina University has two new COVID-19 clusters in two residence halls on campus, the school said in an alert Monday afternoon.

The clusters were found in Jones Hall and White Hall, the school reported. There are currently six positive cases associated with a cluster in Jones Hall and six positive cases at White Hall.

The state defines a cluster as five or more cases in close proximity.

ECU started classes on Aug. 10. On Sunday, Aug. 23, the school announced that it would move all undergraduate classes online starting Wednesday, Aug. 26. Classes Monday and Tuesday had previously been suspended.

This is ECU’s 11th reported cluster, with nine connected to campus residence halls, one identified in the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and another associated with the university’s football team.

Over the weekend, ECU reported six new clusters.

As of Aug. 24, the state Health and Human Services Department reports 15% of the state’s total coronavirus caseload among people ages 18 to 24.

On its COVID-19 dashboard, the school reports 1,458 students have been tested, with 108 testing positive.
