Reported coronavirus hospitalizations in NC are up and cases increase by nearly 1,200

North Carolina added more than 1,000 new cases to its coronavirus total Monday, and the death toll from the pandemic grew by 10 people statewide.

The state Department of Health and Human Services reported 167,313 confirmed cases of COVID-19, up 1,186 from Sunday’s total.

On Saturday, DHHS reported a spike of 2,585 cases, a new single-day high.

Reported fatalities from COVID-19 in North Carolina increased by 10 to 2,702. In Wake County, the death toll approached 200 since the first reported fatality reported in April.

DHHS on Monday also reported 145,884 people in the state have recovered from COVID-19.

Testing continued to ramp up in North Carolina as the number of COVID-19 tests passed 2.25 million Monday. The rate of positive test results fell sharply Monday to 7.2%, still higher than the 5% benchmark set by state health officials.

The number of reported hospitalized COVID-19 patients grew slightly to 923, and DHHS reported 346 people suspected of having the virus entered hospital beds statewide over the last 24 hours. With 84% of hospitals reporting, available inpatient beds fell slightly to 5,950 and there were 12 more intensive-care beds available for a total of 648, according to NC DHHS.
