1977: Graduates from Duke University Law School, works as a junior associate at the law firm of Kilpatrick & Cody.

1980: Works as a federal prosecutor in the antitrust section of the U.S. Justice Department in Atlanta.

1981: Wins a seat on the Atlanta city council.

1993: Is elected mayor, winning 73 percent of the vote.

1997: Is re-elected mayor.

2000: Federal investigation begins.

2003: Campbell goes to work with Willie Gary, a millionaire trial lawyer based in Florida and chairman of the board of trustees at Shaw University.

2004: Campbell charged with racketeering, bribery, fraud and tax evasion.
