A Johnston County house fire that killed a father and his 2-year-old son began when the child was playing with a lighter on a bed, officials say.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 1592 Beulahtown Road near Kenly around 11 a.m. Sunday.
David William Creech, 37, and his son, Matthew, were found dead in the fire, according to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.
Creech's 10-year-old son, Johnny, and 3-year-old son, Bryson, were transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, as was his girlfriend, 36-year-old Serena Brock. They were initially listed in serious condition and treated for smoke inhalation, but their conditions have stabilized, said Jeff Caldwell, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.
