Police estimate a Porsche was traveling 148 mph when it went off the Wade Avenue ramp on Thursday afternoon and struck trees, killing the driver.

Matthew Jared Strouch, 40, of Raleigh, a surgeon at UNC Rex Healthcare, was trying to maneuver the 2016 sedan from westbound Wade Avenue onto the curving ramp that leads to Interstate 40 East, police said.

As the Porsche was heading into the right curve of the ramp, it went straight and off the left side of the ramp instead. The car went airborne, struck a tree and broke into pieces, police said.

The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. Strouch was taken to WakeMed Hospital, where he died, police said.

Strouch joined UNC Rex Healthcare in 2012. He was medical director of the Colorectal Division of North Carolina Surgery and specialized in life-saving procedures for patients with colon and rectal cancer and other gastrointestinal problems, the hospital said in a statement.
