Police make arrest in Durham bank robbery and shooting; search continues for second suspect

Police have arrested a man in connection with a bank robbery in Durham on Wednesday in which a bank employee was shot in the arm.

Javon Cheek, 24, of Durham was arrested, Durham police said in a news release Thursday evening. Police are still trying to find a second man in connection with the crime.

The robbery occurred at a SunTrust branch at 2008 E. N.C. 54 around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. The robber shot a teller in the arm and left with an undisclosed amount of money, Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

Police asked for the public’s help to identify the suspect.

Cheek has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

“He was also served with an outstanding warrant from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office charging him with being a sex offender and failing to report his new address,” according to the news release.

Cheek was placed in the Durham County Jail under a $500,000 bond.

Police said they are still trying to find Larry Lamar Johnson, 29, of Durham. Johnson is wanted on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the bank robbery on Wednesday.
