Police have identified the man found Tuesday shot to death outside of apartments on West Channing Avenue as 43-year-old Reginald M. Johnson.

Officers were sent to a call about a man being wounded by gunshots about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, but he was dead when they arrived, police spokesman Will Glenn said.

There were 17 homicides in Durham as of July 21, according to the Police Department website. That was up from 11 at the same time last year but down from 23 the year before that.

All told there were 21 homicides in Durham last year, according to the website, down from 42 the year before that.
