Fatal pedestrian accident on Fayetteville Road in Garner; commuter traffic restricted

A pedestrian died Monday morning when hit by a vehicle on Fayetteville Road, U.S. 401, near the Mechanical Boulevard intersection, police said, and traffic was restricted while investigators worked at the scene.

Police said the man killed was 60 years old, but they withheld his identity pending notification of his next of kin.

The crash happened about 5:15 a.m., police said.

By 7:30, police had opened one lane in each direction on Fayetteville Road, but they asked drivers to avoid the area and to use alternate routes. All lanes opened about 9 a.m.
