Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Michael Dexter Brodie as an inmate with the N.C. Department of Corrections. The story also incorrectly reported that Brodie targeted Raleigh’s city hall with bomb threats because his ex-girlfriend had married someone else and gotten pregnant.

Federal authorities on Thursday charged a man with mailing bomb threats that emptied Raleigh’s City Hall earlier this year.

Michael Dexter Brodie, 53, of Durham, has been charged with two counts of mailing bomb threat hoaxes, said Robert J. Higdon Jr., the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The federal indictment by a grand jury in the federal court’s Eastern District cites incidents on May 14 and June 21.

A federal grand jury on Sept. 6 returned an indictment charging Brodie with the offenses, Higdon reported.

Police said Brodie targeted the city of Raleigh’s government offices with bomb threats that resulted in multiple evacuations.

Brodie could spend up to 10 years for each count of the offense if he is convicted, as well as a $250,000 fine.

A federal magistrate ordered a public defender appointed for Brodie and scheduled a hearing for Sept. 25.
