Steve Hammel, who recently retired from WRAL, will become interim executive director and general manager for UNC-TV.

The appointment was announced Monday night in a news release from UNC President Margaret Spellings.

Hammel assumed the interim role on Monday following the departure of Brian Sickora, who has been director and general manager for the past two years. Sickora resigned earlier this month for a position with a marijuana investment firm based in New York.

Spellings said the university system would begin a search for a permanent director.

Hammel served as vice president and general manager for WRAL-TV and Fox 50 for the past 10 years. He announced his retirement in March and left in July.

“As we begin the search for a permanent director, we welcome Steve Hammel to the helm as he brings decades of experience, a savvy media mind, and the skills and talent to keep UNC-TV on its path of growth and innovation,” Spellings said in the news release.

The public broadcasting network includes four digital channels that reach across the state.
