A mother left her 9-year-old and 19-month-old children by the side of a road in Cary and then sped away, police say.
Police in Fuquay-Varina found Jennifer Jean Westfall, 38, Monday evening and arrested her on a warrant that Cary police swore out last Friday.
Westfall is accused of two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.
Cary police say Westfall left the children on the side of the road Oct. 2 near the Reedy Creek elementary and middle schools “and drove off at a high rate of speed.”

A witness saw Westfall leaving and went to the school campus to tell a school resource officer, Capt. Randall Rhyne said.
The children were unhurt, and the officer brought them to the schools, Rhyne said.
Police contacted Wake County Child Protective Services, and officials there put the children into foster care, he said.
Rhyne said police have not been able to establish a motive in the incident.
The child-abuse charges say Westfall created “a substantial risk of physical injury” for each child.
Westfall posted $2,000 bail and was ordered to appear at a court hearing on Nov. 28.
