A 50-year-old woman was hit and killed by an Amtrak train Thursday morning when she was walking across the railroad tracks near Swift Avenue, Durham police said.

Judy Estrada of Durham was hit about 7:15 a.m., police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said in a news release.

The Swift Avenue crossing is across West Main Street from Duke University’s East Campus, west of downtown.

Estrada was walking across the tracks toward West Main Street, police said.

Warning signals were working and arms had come down to keep people and cars off the tracks, according to police.

The train driver blew the horn and activated the brakes, but the train could not stop before hitting Estrada. No one on the train was injured, Michael said.

Swift Avenue was closed for about 2½ hours while investigators were on site.
