Two men from Charlotte were arrested Monday with what Wake County sheriff’s investigators said was more than 24 pounds of methamphetamine worth more than $3.3 million on the street.

The two were in a 1999 Ford pickup truck that deputies stopped at Interstate 440 and Poole Road in mid-afternoon, according to arrest records.

The sheriff’s office said the arrests of Mario Alberto Llamas-Hernandez, 37, and Gonzalo Alberto Hernandez, 23, resulted from an extensive investigation that is continuing.

Two counts each of trafficking in methamphetamine were based on the truck holding approximately 11 kilograms – more than 24 pounds – of the drug, the sheriff’s office said.

That quantity would be worth about $3.3 million when divided into small quantities for sale on the street, the sheriff’s office said.

Llamas-Hernandez and Hernandez were both listed as living at 3733 Oakwood Road in Charlotte. It was unclear, however, if they were related or how.

Llamas-Hernandez was held on $2 million bail, and a detainer request filed by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated that he previously had been ordered deported.

A spokesman for ICE said that information about the cases of people who are not in federal custody are not public information.

The detainer request said Llamas-Hernandez is also known as Miguel Hernandez Perez.

Llamas-Hernandez was convicted in September 2006 of trafficking in Schedule II drugs – the group that includes cocaine – in Mecklenburg County and served as five-year prison sentence after being held for two years before he was convicted.

Hernandez was held in lieu of $1.5 million bail. In addition to meth trafficking, he was also charged with maintaining the Ford for keeping and selling drugs.
