Speeding driver shot by trooper in Johnston County, patrol says
A trooper shot a man who had been stopped Thursday for speeding near Princeton, according to a State Highway Patrol news release.
The trooper had stopped a Nissan sedan driven by Darius Jayquan Rogers, 20, of Clayton. He was traveling 96 mph in a 55 mph zone on U.S. 70 near Edwards Road in Johnston County, according to the release.
An altercation between Rogers and the trooper happened during the stop, the release said. Rogers, who had a pistol, was shot by the trooper, who was identified as Sgt. J. M. Dorsey, the release said.
Responders to scene began life-saving procedures until emergency medical staff arrived, troopers say.
Rogers, who was alone, was taken to WakeMed with serious injuries, troopers say.
Dorsey was not injured during the altercation, the release said.
U.S. 70 was closed in both directions while the incident was being investigated, according to multiple media reports. Aerial video from ABC11, The News & Observer’s news partner, showed nearly 20 Highway Patrol vehicles surrounding a car on the side of the road.
Dorsey has been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation. The Highway Patrol and the State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident, which is standard procedure in all trooper-involved shootings, according to the release.
