Cherry Berry? Brewers give nod to North Carolina ‘elevator lady’ with themed beers

You’ve probably seen her face in elevators — and now people across North Carolina can raise their glasses in tribute to the state’s labor commissioner.

Brewers have introduced beers that recognize the so-called “elevator lady” Cherie Berry, WFMY reports.

As head of the department that inspects the state’s elevators, she has gained attention for having her photo posted inside them.

People also know her for having a name that seems to rhyme — though it’s pronounced Shuh-Ree Berry, The News & Observer previously reported.

A Charlotte brewery on Friday announced in a Facebook post that it plans to release a “kettle soured” ale called Elevator Lady. The post from The Unknown Brewing Company includes a “Certification of Hoperation” graphic, which looks similar to postings in North Carolina’s elevators.

“We’ve never died in an elevator so we wanted to pay tribute!” the post said. “Made with cherries & berries. If you are from NC you will get it.”

Across the state in Beaufort, Mill Whistle Brewing is also showing recognition with the Elevator Queen “cherry berry sour ale,” according to an Instagram post. The post includes a graphic showing a woman sitting on a throne inside an elevator.

“We aged this beer on cherries for three months,” Tom Backman of Mill Whistle Brewing told WFMY.

The beer release was ironic because it came days after Berry announced she wouldn’t run for re-election in 2020, Backman said in a phone interview with McClatchy.

“It was sold out within two weeks, which is a record for us,” he said.

While Mill Whistle Brewing says its tribute beer was on tap April 6, the Elevator Lady brew is set to be available in The Unknown Brewing Company’s taproom April 30, Owner Brad Shell told McClatchy.

Berry, a Republican, has served the state for five four-year terms.
