Raleigh police officer who was shot during January traffic stop is out of hospital

Four months after being shot during a traffic stop in west Raleigh, a Raleigh police officer is out of the hospital

A Tweet by the Raleigh Police Department Friday morning announced injured Officer Charles Ainsworth had been released from the hospital.

Ainsworth was investigating a report of a stolen car on Teakwood Place near Western Boulevard on Jan. 9 when he was shot multiple times, including once in the neck. He underwent surgery at WakeMed that night, police said.

Cedric Jamal Kearney, 23, of Henderson shot Ainsworth multiple times with a .45-caliber pistol, according to police. He has been charged with attempted murder. Three other suspects connected to Kearney have been charged with various crimes, police said.

Ainsworth joined Raleigh police in December 2017. He graduated from N.C. State University in 2014 with a degree in psychology.

Ainsworth’s family has partnered with the Local Government Federal Credit Union to establish “The Charles Ainsworth Recovery Fund,” said Raleigh police spokeswoman Donna-maria Harris.

Firefighters and police officers also donated money they raised from their annual hockey game at PNC Arena last month.
