No injuries reported in shooting involving Raleigh police officer
A police officer in Raleigh was involved in a shooting early Saturday morning. No one was injured.
Officers responded to a call about an attempted car break-in before 8:00 a.m. near Southeast Raleigh High School. Police say the suspect, Najae Devonte Riley, pointed a handgun at the owner of the car before fleeing.
According to a Raleigh Police Department press release, Riley then attempted to carjack a Raleigh Solid Waste Services truck but couldn’t operate the vehicle, fleeing towards Southeast Raleigh High School.
The first officer to encounter Riley said she believed he pointed a handgun at her, to which she commanded him to put down.
Officers said that after a chase on foot, additional officers responded to the scene and Riley refused demands to get on the ground.
Then, police said he “thrust both hands forward toward officers in a manner consistent with pointing a handgun.” This prompted multiple shots fired from a second officer that did not hit Riley.
After taking him into custody, police found a handgun where the attempted carjacking happened.
The officer who fired shots was near wearing a body camera, but the arrest was filmed by dash cameras and body cameras on other officers.
The Raleigh Police investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to call 911.
This is a developing story.
