If you were hoping for at least a little bit of snowfall in the Triangle this season, you may be in luck.
Snow could finally be coming to central North Carolina this week, forecasters say.
Rain is expected overnight Thursday, when the temperature in Raleigh could plunge to 28 degrees, the National Weather Service says. The rain has the potential to turn into or mix with snow in some areas.
Areas to the east of U.S. 1 “will have the best chance of seeing light amounts of snow sticking to grassy and elevated surfaces,” forecasters say.
Those areas include Cary, Raleigh and cities to the south and east, according to a map that National Weather Service forecasters tweeted. Durham and Orange counties are also at risk for wintry weather, forecasters say.
Though “little accumulation” is expected, 1 to 2 inches of snowfall is possible in Eastern North Carolina.
One forecast model shows 1 to 3 inches of snow could blanket the Raleigh and Durham areas, but it may not be cold enough to reach those totals, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner.
The Triangle last saw measurable snow in December 2018, The News & Observer reported this month.
So far in February, the average temperature in the Raleigh-Durham area has been 50.9 degrees, 7.4 degrees higher than normal, weather service data shows.
