Looking for a job? Wegmans is one of the best places to work, Fortune says
A newcomer to North Carolina’s grocery store scene was just named one of the most attractive places to work.
Fortune ranks the supermarket chain Wegmans Food Markets No. 3 on its list of “100 Best Companies to Work For.”
And the grocer wasn’t the only company with North Carolina ties to earn a spot at the top of the business magazine’s rankings.
Technology companies Cisco and Workday also made it in the top 5, according to the results released Tuesday. The businesses’ websites list offices in the Triangle.
So what makes these companies top places for employees?
The business magazine gives Wegmans a nod for a question-and-answer forum that links all workers to a senior vice president. Fortune also says the chain “boasts a cult following even among employees.”
Wegmans opened its first North Carolina store in September, The News & Observer reported. On the first day, the number of people waiting to get inside the Raleigh supermarket reached about 3,000, breaking a company record.
Future locations could be in the nearby towns of Cary, Chapel Hill, Holly Springs and Wake Forest, according to the Wegmans website. The first Cary store is expected to open this year.
Cisco, ranking No. 4, got nods for its benefits, including workplace yoga classes and time off for new parents and grandparents. The company says it has used technology to find solutions for businesses since 1984.
Coming just behind in the rankings was Workday, which creates cloud applications. Fortune recognized the company for its programs to help bring military veterans and “candidates with diverse backgrounds” on board.
All three companies made it onto Fortune’s top 10 list last year.
To come up with the 2020 rankings, the magazine says it teamed up with the firm Great Place to Work to analyze employee survey results and other factors. Companies with more than 1,000 U.S. workers could apply to be considered for the survey, results show.
Overall, hotel giant Hilton earned the highest spot on the list, according to the findings. The technology company Ultimate Software ranked just behind at No. 2.
