Wake, Durham schools closed Friday due to wintry weather

Fear about slick road conditions Friday morning is causing some Triangle school districts to cancel classes.

Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties and Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools will be closed Friday due to the hazardous road conditions.

Wake made its announcement with a snow day video courtesy of students from Jones Dairy Elementary School in Wake Forest. School leaders also announced that they will use extra time built into the school year, called banked instructional hours, so that students will not have to make up the snow day.

This comes after school districts like Durham, Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange decided to not have classes Thursday in anticipation of the wintry weather conditions. Other districts like Wake and Johnston counties sent students home early Thursday.

Gov. Roy Cooper said 29 of the state’s 116 school districts were closed Thursday, and 55 districts were sending students home early.

Students lobbied Wake County on social media Thursday for a decision about classes on Friday. The school district, which is known for its at times sassy tweets, played along as it told people to wait.
