Chatham County nursing home reports two more coronavirus deaths; now at 12 in past week

Twenty-one residents at the Laurels of Chatham, a nursing home in Pittsboro, have now died of COVID-19, the state reported Tuesday.

The two additional deaths make the nursing home’s death total the most in the state, according to data released by the NC Department of Health and Human Services on congregate living facilities. Twelve residents at the nursing home have died in the past week alone.

That also means that of the 69 residents reported to have been infected with the coronavirus, 30% have died.

People 65 and older and those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to suffering from severe symptoms of COVID-19, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Laurels of Chatham, with a capacity for 140 beds, has one of the highest number of reported coronavirus cases among nursing homes in the state. It’s one of five homes that has reported more than 100 positive cases.

It is also one of two nursing homes with at least 20 deaths. Pruitt Health-Carolina Point in Orange County has 112 reported positive cases and 20 deaths.
