Three new coronavirus outbreaks reported at Triangle nursing, assisted-living facilities

Three new outbreaks of COVID-19 have been reported over the past week at Triangle nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, according to state data released Friday afternoon.

New cases were reported this week at Pettigrew Rehabilitation Center in Durham, Barbour Court Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Smithfield and HeartFields at Cary.

There have now been outbreaks at 20 nursing homes or assisted-living facilities in the Triangle. The state Department of Health and Human Services considers 17 to be ongoing.

Long-term care facilities have been epicenters of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States and elsewhere. Residents’ chronic health conditions and close living conditions put them at risk of contracting the virus and experiencing severe symptoms.

In North Carolina, 4,360 residents of those facilities have tested positive for COVID-19, and 579 have died. Residents in those facilities make up 60% of the state’s deaths attributed to the coronavirus.

The state reports new figures on congregate living facilities on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Since last Friday, Pettigrew has reported two cases, one each for a resident and staff member. Barbour Court reported two cases among staff. HeartFields reported two cases among residents.

No fatalities have been reported at the three facilities. Two new deaths have been reported since Tuesday at Triangle facilities.

Twenty-two residents at The Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro have died, up from 21 on Tuesday. Sixty-nine residents and 40 staff members have caught the virus.
