As Glenwood South prepares for another weekend, city urges social distancing and masks
If you’re out on Glenwood South this weekend and need a refresher on social distancing, just look down.
On Friday, the City of Raleigh placed 150 sidewalk decals along Glenwood Avenue, from Peace Street to Hillsborough Street, in what is one of the city’s busiest nightlife corridors.
The decals remind people to keep a distance of six feet from others, an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. In recent weeks, North Carolina’s COVID-19 cases have climbed to their highest levels since the beginning of the pandemic.
There are also new sidewalk boards reminding people to wear masks, which are required in Raleigh and, as of this week, statewide.
In the last couple of weeks, crowds have grown on Glenwood South after North Carolina moved into Phase Two of its reopening plan and opened up restaurants at half capacity. The state’s bars remain closed, but there are still hundreds of people going out for drinks in the city’s restaurants.
With the state’s case counts still high, Gov. Roy Cooper announced this week that North Carolina would extend Phase Two for an additional three weeks.
After videos were shared on social media of packed restaurants on Glenwood and people ignoring social distancing, Raleigh responded with a mask order last week.
The city said the decals are yet another reminder.
“The mayor has been very clear about education, education, education when it comes to masks and social distancing,” said Raleigh spokesperson Julia Milstead. “This is one more way to educate folks and remind them to follow the guidelines and that we’re all in this together.”
