Teenage boy seriously injured in drive-by shooting in Durham
A drive-by shooter injured a 16-year-old boy and a 28-year-old man in Durham yesterday evening on East Main Street, according to police.
The Durham Police Department received a report of the shooting at 7:14 p.m. in the 900 block of East Main Street, about three blocks from police headquarters.
The victims were both taken to a hospital. The teenager sustained serious injuries, while the man’s injuries “do not appear life-threatening,” said police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.
Police said the shots came from a “dark blue sedan.”
No charges have been filed, Michael said.
The shooting follows another drive-by shooting that injured three people on Pekoe Avenue near N.C. Central University’s campus on Thursday. The police department has no new updates on that shooting, Michael said.
The recent incidents add to a rising number of shootings in Durham. As of Aug. 22, more than 189 people had been shot in 158 incidents, Michael told The News & Observer.
“We are always looking at ways that we can allocate resources to identified concerns, and these shootings are no different,” Michael said in a written statement. “We have adjusted the schedules of several of our units to provide additional officers to patrol identified areas which allows for a faster response to these violent incidences.”
The department’s Crisis Intervention Team officers work to address mental health concerns and provide referrals to people when necessary, she wrote.
