Gov. Cooper is holding a coronavirus news conference now. Watch it live here.

Gov. Roy Cooper will hold a news conference today to give the latest update on North Carolina’s efforts in slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

Cooper is likely to discuss a new smartphone app that will aid in contact tracing, an important part of the state’s COVID-19 response plan.

The state is currently in Safer At Home Phase 2.5, which allows restaurants, retail stores, salons, gyms and parks to open, but keeps bars closed.

Phase 2.5 is set to expire on October 2.

Last week, Cooper announced that North Carolina’s public school districts could decide to reopen their elementary schools for full-time, in-person instruction. The plan includes a face mask requirement.

How to watch Cooper’s news conference

Today’s news conference can be streamed live here at newsobserver.com and at ncdps.gov/storm-update. It will be delivered in English, Spanish and American Sign Language.

Major affiliated television stations in markets across the state — such as ABC11, WRAL and CBS 17 in the Triangle — normally televise or stream the governor’s news conferences, as well.

Today’s briefing will start at 2 p.m.

Cooper will appear at the briefing with other state officials, including N.C. Department of Health and Human Services secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen, director of Emergency Management Mike Sprayberry and other members of the Coronavirus Task Force.
