Durham police have charged a driver in an accident Friday morning in Durham that involved multiple vehicles and resulted in the death of a pedestrian who was standing on the sidewalk when he was injured.

Serra Gore, 33, of Rougemont, was driving south on North Alston Avenue in a 2018 Mazda CX-3 at approximately 7:20 a.m. when she struck a 2013 Hyundai Genesis, police said in a news release.

The Hyundai Genesis was knocked toward the southeast corner of the intersection of North Alston Avenue and East Geer Street, where it struck a man standing on the sidewalk.

The man was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and did not survive, police said. Police have not identified the man but they said he is in his mid-sixties.

Police charged Gore with failure to stop at a steady red light and misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle.

After colliding with the Hyundai Genesis, the Mazda driven by Gore struck a Carter Community Charter school bus that was stopped in a left turn lane at the intersection. No injuries were reported among the eight students or driver onboard the bus, police said.

The Hyundai Genesis, after hitting the pedestrian, struck an unoccupied and disabled 2015 Nissan Frontier that was parked on the sidewalk in the southeast corner of the intersection, according to the news release.

The crash closed the intersection for a few hours before it was reopened shortly after 10 a.m.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing, but police said they do not suspect speed or driver impairment were factors in the crash.

Anyone with information in the accident is asked to call Investigator J.A. Bell of the department’s Traffic and Crash Team at (919) 560-4935, ext. 29411.
