Veterans Day Parade, City of Oaks Marathon to close these Raleigh streets this weekend

This weekend will see two major events through the streets of downtown Raleigh — the North Carolina Veterans Parade and the 15th annual City of Oaks Marathon.

Several streets will be closed for the parade on Saturday and the marathon on Sunday.

Here’s information about both events, provided by the City of Raleigh.

NC Veterans Parade

Details: The lineup begins at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 6, with the parade starting at 9:30 a.m. A Veterans Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. on the north side of the Capitol.

Parade route: The parade begins on South Salisbury Street heading south; Left onto Lenoir Street; Left onto Fayetteville Street; Left onto Morgan Street; Right onto Salisbury Street; Right onto Edenton Street; Left onto Wilmington Street; Right into the State parking lot for disassembly.

Road closings:

8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.:

  • South Salisbury Street between Davie Street and South Street
  • Cabarrus Street between Salisbury Street and McDowell Street
  • Lenoir Street between Salisbury Street and McDowell Street

9:30 a.m. to 12 noon:

  • Edenton Street between North Salisbury Street and North Wilmington Street

City of Oaks Marathon

Details: On Sunday, Nov. 7, the marathon, half-marathon and 10k begin at 7 a.m. The 5k begins at 7:20 a.m. All begin at 400 Glenwood Ave., and end at the Smoky Hollow development at 500 N. West St. Roads will be affected from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Route: The route will be in and around downtown Raleigh, Hillsborough Street and greenways heading past Crabtree Valley Mall (House Creek Trail, Reedy Creek Trail and Mine Creek Trail).

Road closings:

3 a.m. to 3 p.m.

West Street between North Street and Johnson Street will be closed

3 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Glenwood Avenue between Peace Street and Tucker Street

6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hillsborough Street from Glenwood Avenue to Faircloth Street.

Roads will reopen on a rolling basis after runners pass through. All cross-streets at least one block in each direction will be detoured.

Where to watch

Organizers identify the following locations as good spots for cheering on runners:

  • The start line off Glenwood Ave and the finish line at Smoky Hollow
  • The State Capitol area
  • The corner of Glenwood Ave. and Hillsborough Street
  • The Bell Tower on Hillsborough Street
