What’s open and closed on New Year’s Eve and Day in the Triangle? Here’s a list.
The new year is almost here, and while you’re probably busy making plans for how you’ll ring in 2022, you might be wondering how the holiday affects hours at stores and more around the Triangle.
While New Year’s Day is a federal and state holiday and typically affects hours any year, this year the holiday falls on a Saturday, and will likely be observed on Friday — New Year’s Eve. That means most government offices will be closed, while some banks will have adjusted hours that day.
If you’re wondering what’s open and closed near you, The News & Observer has compiled a list of closures and adjusted hours at government offices, banks and businesses around the Triangle.
Note: You might need to look up hours at specific stores or offices, but we’ve provided a link to do so where possible. When in doubt about a location’s hours, try calling ahead before you leave the house.
New Year’s hours for local government offices
▪ Wake County — Wake County government offices will observe Friday, Dec. 31, as the New Year’s Day holiday. Most offices will be closed on this day, and others may have altered hours. Find out more about how the holiday affects Wake County government hours at wakegov.com/holiday-schedule.
▪ Raleigh — City of Raleigh administrative offices will be closed on Friday, Dec. 31, for the New Year’s Day holiday. Trash, recycling, and yard waste collection will operate on a normal schedule. ▪ Durham County — Most Durham County offices, including the tax administration office and the Durham County Library, will be closed Friday, Dec. 31. ▪ City of Durham — Most Durham city offices will observe Friday, Dec. 31, as the New Year’s holiday. Most city offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency city operations, will be closed on this date. During this time, you can still reach emergency services by calling 911. ▪ Orange County — Orange County government will observe Friday, Dec. 31, as the New Year’s Day holiday. County offices, including the tax office, will be closed.
Orange County Waste & Recycling Centers and the county landfill will be open on Friday, but will close at noon. The services will not be open on Saturday.
Thursday, Dec. 30, will be the last day to make an in-person tax payment in Orange County in 2021. Payments must be placed in the dropbox located outside the tax office door (228 S. Churton St. in Hillsborough) by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Orange County offices will reopen on Monday, Jan. 3.

▪ Hillsborough — Hillsborough town offices will be closed on Friday, Dec. 31, for the New Year’s Day holiday. Garbage will instead be collected on Monday, Jan. 3. Find out more about how the New Year’s holiday affects Hillsborough government services at hillsboroughnc.gov.
▪ Chapel Hill — Chapel Hill will observe Friday, Dec. 31, as the New Year’s holiday. All administrative offices will be closed on Friday. The Chapel Hill Community Center and pool, Hargraves Center and Homestead Aquatic Center will be open on Friday with varying hours. New Year’s hours for state government offices
Most state government offices in North Carolina will be closed Friday, Dec. 31, in observation of the New Year’s Day holiday.
New Year’s hours for federal government offices
Under federal guidelines for “in lieu of” holidays, the federal government will observe Friday, Dec. 31, as the New Year’s Day holiday.
Most federal government offices and services will be closed Friday, though the U.S. Postal Service will be open.
New Year’s hours for U.S. Postal Service
The U.S. Postal Service will be open on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31. The Postal Service says post office locations nationwide will be open and operating on this day.
The Postal Service will be closed on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.
▪ Post office locations will be closed on this day in observation of the postal holiday.
▪ Regular mail will not be delivered on this day.
▪ Priority Mail Express mail will be delivered on this day, though deliveries are made only in limited locations and an extra fee for those deliveries may apply.
The Postal Service will resume regular mail service and post offices will reopen on Monday, Jan. 3.
New Year’s hours for banks
▪ Bank of America — Bank of America financial centers will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 1, for the New Year’s Day holiday. According to bankrate.com, Bank of America locations will operate under normal hours on Friday, Dec. 31. Bank of America ATMs are generally open 24 hours and will be open on both days. ▪ Wells Fargo — Most Wells Fargo locations in the Triangle will close at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and be closed on New Year’s Day. New Year’s hours for local grocery stores
▪ Aldi — Aldi stores will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 1. Most Aldi stores in the Triangle will close at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31. Find specific hours at your local Aldi by searching for a store near you at aldi.us/stores.

▪ Harris Teeter — Harris Teeter stores will operate under normal hours on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Harris Teeter pharmacies will be closed New Year’s Day.
▪ Publix — All Publix stores will open at normal hours and close at 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. North Carolina Publix stores will open at normal hours on New Year’s Day, and most Publix stores will close at 7 p.m. that day. Publix pharmacies will be closed on New Year’s Day. ▪ Target — According to Country Living, Target stores will be open on New Year’s Eve, but most stores will close at 9 p.m. Target stores will be open regular hours on New Year’s day, but hours could vary by location. ▪ Trader Joe’s — All Trader Joe’s stores will close at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on New Year’s Day.
