Someone in North Carolina started the new year with a top lottery prize.
A $2 ticket bought at a convenience store in Forsyth County scored $1 million in the New Year’s Eve Mega Millions drawing, lottery officials said Saturday.
The mystery winner matched the numbers on all five white balls, beating odds of 1 in 12.6 million, according to a lottery news release. The ticket was sold at the Circle K on Williams Road in Lewisville, according to the lottery.
Winners of $1 million prizes in the Mega Millions game take home $707,511 after taxes, officials said. .
Two other tickets in the drawing won $10,000 each, officials said.
One ticket was bought at Great D on U.S. 601 in Yadkinville and the other at Walnut Cove Market on South Main Street in Walnut Cove, according to the lottery.
The winners of the $1 million and $10,000 tickets have six months to claim their prizes.
No one hit Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot, which soars to $244 million as an annuity or $172.5 million cash in Tuesday’s drawing, officials said.
The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.5 million, according to the lottery. Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the game’s website.
Saturday’s Powerball drawing offers a $500 million jackpot, with 1 in 292 million odds.
N.C. Powerball and Mega Millions tickets are available at lottery retailers, through Online Play on the lottery’s website and on the NC lottery mobile app.
