Exit ramp from eastbound I-540 in Raleigh will remain closed longer than expected
An exit ramp that drivers would use from eastbound Interstate 540 toward Wake Forest will remain closed longer than expected Wednesday.
The Exit 16 ramp from eastbound I-540 onto northbound Capital Boulevard/U.S. 1 was closed starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday for an emergency water valve repair, according to the City of Raleigh.
Drivers who want to get on northbound Capital are being detoured to the next exit, U.S. 401, then directed onto I-540 westbound back to Exit 16.
The repair was expected to take all night to complete. The city initially estimated the ramp would reopen by 10 a.m. Wednesday but now says it will remain closed through the evening.
The Exit 16 ramp from eastbound I-540 onto southbound Capital Boulevard is not affected.
The closure is expected to slow traffic on eastbound I-540, as drivers navigate the detour.
“Motorists approaching these areas should expect traffic delays and are advised to avoid these areas if possible,” the city said in an advisory issued late Tuesday afternoon.
